Battery bay clean up and lithium upgrade! - Gem930 - 12-21-2024

Started my 48v lithium battery conversion.  Since I won’t have time to install the 48v Victron inverter before our Christmas  trip, I’m just wiring a few of the batteries in parallel for now. I had to take care of some minor rust (much better shape than the wet bay!!!) and it looks great now.  I really like the Ospho rust converter.  I scraped the bad areas, treated first with Ospho, then Rustolum rust restorer and then paint.  Looks much better.  I should have gotcha better “before” pic.  Also, it’s amazing how much better the battery trays slide with little grease and 1/2 the weight!

Looks great.

You may have the same long term reaction to the LiPo that many of us had. You install them, make adjustments, and monitor closely. After a bit the monitoring is less frequent. And eventually you realize they just WORK, and the focus moves somewhere else.

Thx!  This is my third (well 4th if you count my airplane) lithium install.  You are correct eventually they just turn into lighter more powerful batteries and you don’t think about them.   This will be my FIRST 48v install, however!

One mistake I made on my 48v install I used the same switch that Newell installed for the 12vdc house batteries with bad results so I recommend using a switch made for high voltage DC and high current rating. The switch Newell installed lasted 2 cycles on and off before it went off like a roman candle looked like a blow torch coming out of it. This switch is made for electric cars.

Oh wow, thx so much. I can almost guarantee I would have made that same mistake! I’ll be ordering a switch!

If you determine it’s needed, Bluesea makes 500A and a 600A disconnect switches.
