Trailer Spare Tire Storage
#1

So I keep spare tires for my coach, one for the front 315/80r22.5 and 11r24.5 for the rear. I have them in my trailer and they take up a lot of room. So I started looking and measuring and decided that I thought that I could make a couple of compartments recessed in the floor for them. I needed 13” for the height of the tire when it’s layed down, so I ended up calculating that if I made a raised section in the middle of the trailer that I could fit them in. The bottom of the compartments would not be any lower than the axles. The vehicle I use will still fit in fine, will have 3” on each side between the inside of the tires and the raised area, the raised area is 50” wide and the inside track of our vehicle is 56”.

Cut the existing floor trusses out, they will be reused on the sides

Welded the side trusses in, I also boxed in the c channel trusses that will support the side trusses.

Welding in steel angle supports for the recessed compartment

Lined the inside of the compartment with 1/2” pressure treated plywood and painted everything

Cut the old floor in half and put hinges on it for doors

Final product with tires in place

Got the depth just right, I am going to put rubber on top of the wheel to protect it

Good looking job!  Do you find any long term tire issues with your toad riding on the e tracks?

Thanks, cannot say I have. The tires really straddle the E-track and sit on the aluminum trim on either side of the E-track, its recessed. That is the only thing that bothers me a bit, is the aluminum makes a loud popping sound often as you drive over it.

Appreciate it. I try to make things look nicer than when I started.
The trailer was all bare plywood when I purchased it, I did the epoxy floor and painted the walls grey. Added the LED lighting as well.

Nice work, Jeff! I tried mounting e-track on the surface (not recessed) and found that my jeep would slide sideways during transport. Your set up looks better.

Yea this system works good. We tow a heavy toad, 2016 Range Rover TD6 diesel, and I put the straps on diagonal. Have been on some pretty rough roads and the toad has not moved. Really there is not much room for the toad to go, it fits but there is not much room on either side.
