My brother-in-law has worked on lots of generators before and I would like to help him remove the generator and replace the exhaust ‘rope’ that keeps the smell out of the coach (hopefully that’s all it is).  We were going to rent a portable engine hoist - what all is involved in this procedure please?  I don’t see anything like this on the forums after doing a search (but it never works for me)…

I could have swore that I saw something on this a while back where an engine hoist was not recommended. What was suggested was using a pallet jack from the bottom along with some cribbing wood.

I believe it is a control issue, but also could be an accessibility issue.

Should I dump the suspension or raise it up to get the genset out and how long does this job normally take?

Pallet jack is your friend. You do not need to take the unit all the way out. In fact don’t, just pull it out far enough to access the exhaust pipe.

You will need to remove the pin from the ram that moves it in and out.

After replacing the rope, you will need to guide the pipe back into its receiving opening.

Give your self two hours.

Worked with my BIL this afternoon and it doesn’t look like it’s the slide pipe that’s leaking. There is a black hose that looks like a radiator hose across the top of the engine - anyone know what this part is or a part number? I’ll try to find it in the books.

That is the hose from the turbo to the intake manifold

Can I pick that hose up from a parts store locally? Is it a special type of hose or can I use a silicone hose?

It appears to be a molded hose. It would be a challenge to get a generic hose to bend and fit correctly. I would find the Kohler part number.

That black hose will have nothing to do with smell but it will make your engine run rich due to lack of compressed air if its leaking. Take it off measure the inside ID on both ends then get on ebay and look for silicon turbo hose with same id an radius bend then put a piece of aluminum pipe between the two or just look for one that Kohler sells.
