Amana refrigerator quit cooling
#1

Our Amana refrigerator has quit cooling on both the freezer and refrigerator sides.  We may try to have it repaired but will most likely just replace it.

The issue we're having with finding a new replacement is that our cut out is only 69 inches high and it seems most new refrigerators are between 70 and 72 inches tall.

We have a drawer under the frig cut out that holds cutting boards, sheet pans and such that I may be be able to modify in order to accommodate the taller refrigerators.

Has anyone had to lower the base where the refrigerator mounts in order to fit a taller model?

It doesn't look like it will be difficult but I could be wrong.

Thanks

We're also limited to 27 inches on depth due to the AH and generator exhaust pipe that runs behind the frig.

Tyler, you will be limited to counter depth units. Hopefully that will narrow your search.

Do you know if the compressor is running?

Typical causes:
Refrigerant has leaked out. The Amana units used R134, so recharging for a temp fix is as simple as adding a tap valve, and recharging to 6 psi or so.

Compressor has quit. First cause would be the capacitor on the compressor. Easily found on line and replaced.Compressors are readily avail, but will require soldering and recharging.

Thanks for the info, Richard.

We pulled the refrigerator out to get an accurate measurement and after pushing it back into place it started working again. Haha.

We could hear the unit running before pulling it out but it was not blowing any cold air on the inside. We might be on borrowed time with the refrigerator, but it's working for the moment.

We've been looking at counter depth units, but even then finding one that we like that is less than 27 inches deep has been a challenge.

More than likely I'm going to have to lower the base of the cutout in order to fit a taller unit in there. We'd like to find a unit that sits flush with the face of the cabinet but I don't know if we'll get that lucky.

A seized bearing on the evaporator fan might produce the same symptoms. Bumping it might well get it running again. It is easily changed from the freezer section. Good luck!

Once again, Russ for the score!

Given the additional info that the compressor was running but no circulation of cold air, I would be ordering a fan from the link that Dean provided. I have used them many times for parts.

go find my thread . I replaced my amana with a counter depth unit I bought at best buy. Fits perfect.. I listed the fridge model number in the post. I have the same issue with the exhaust running behind the fridge up to the roof. I reused the lower brackets and jammed a piece of wood across the the top

My Amana quit cooling well and mine was both fans had quit. The fan under the unit for the condenser and the fan inside the freezer for the refrigerator cooling. I replaced both of those fans and mine is running great. Also noted that someone wrote in sharpie on the back that the cooling unit was replaced. So that made me feel better about putting a few new fans on it. Personally I think the old heart inverter is what is killing them, I suspect it’s a modified sine wave inverter and that’s hard on motors. I know my ceiling fan did not sound happy running in the inverter.

I have seen refrigerator fans fail using modified sine wave inverters.
