Starlink Mini Installed Inside the Winegard In-Motion Dome
#1

I installed a Starlink Mini on the roof inside the Winegard RoadTrip Mission TV Antenna Dome.  I took the dome off of the roof (8 nuts, unplug 3 cables) and removed the satellite TV antenna from inside the dome.  The Starlink Mini comes with a pole mount adapter, I cut a piece of tubing and welded a mounting plate to it.  I mounted the assembly to the dome base and installed the Mini on it.  I scrounged around the shop and found 2 power connectors that fit the Mini. I installed one on the each end of the RoadTrip power cable (inside the dome and inside the TV cabinet), plugged one end into the Mini and the other end into the Starlink Power Adapter.  I plugged that into 120VAC behind the TV.  It works great!

There are 6 screws that hold the dome on.  It's easy to remove the Starlink Mini if I want to take it with me on a different adventure.

I can add that after a year of using a flat mount dishie that I could tell no loss of signal for what we use it for. Three times in our entire six month trip, I had to put out the ground based dishie because of trees in the campground.

Did you do the hack where the motion is cut out?  I thought about doing that.

Jim,

I had TWO gen @ dishies. The one that turned into a flat mount was "disassembled" from the motorized components leaving a 1/2 thick sheet with the goodies on the back of it. I hogged out a piece of starboard and mounted the flat sheet into the starboard. My second dishie was the gen 2 on a tripod. If I needed it I let it find it's happy place.

I ran two cords to the router. One to the flat mount up top, and one to the ground dishie. I would simply switch them at the router as needed.

I've heard of some putting the dish on their dashboards and getting it to work like that. Also some have mounted it in the shower under the skylight.
I bought a mini for our 30' Monaco to use on our Alaska trip this summer. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet. Starlink is certainly a game changer.

I think they will keep getting smaller until the internal wi-fi router determines the size.  I tried the Mini on 12VDC but it kept shutting off as others have reported.  I'll try it with a small 12V inverter & see if that helps.  I like the idea of having it in the boonies where there is no other communications available.  I was using Skype along with Starlink to make phone calls on the last camping trip that had no cellular signals.  It's a new found freedom being able to take care of business from just about anywhere. I mounted it in the dome because the power wiring was already there, it's watertight and I didn't need to use watertight connectors.

Richard, when you switch from one dish to the other, back & forth, how does that work with the account & billing?  I still have a Gen 2 Starlink that I had thought about removing the motor.

They are both on my account. Starlink did not seem to care which one I was using. Look at your account details and see what equipment is listed.

One trick we use is to put the phone on airplane mode, so that forces it from using a weak cell tower signal to using VOIP on the Starlink.

I'd like to have the mini and leave the big one at home but don't care for paying for 2, I'm going to check into this.
