50 Amp Shore Power Cable Problem
#1

2020P Coach 1482, I noticed the shore power cable insulation was failing.  It is a Southwire SOOW 6/4 cable.  The designations of the cable are physically stamped into the insulation and now there are portions of the insulation that are opening up like a zipper in that stamped insulation exposing the internal wires.  I tried using splicing tape but the power reel didn't like that passing through the reel so I replaced the cable.  May be something for others to check.  My photo is of just a small portion, other areas had the internal wires exposed but I had already wrapped them with splicing tape.

When I got my coach my 50A cable also displayed some cuts in the cord.  There were adjustments that I had to make in the cord reel that would prevent further damage, then I replaced the cord when I changed to Lifepo4 lithium batteries.

Is there a certain type of tape that should be used for this?

Our 6/4 SOOW cable was degrading. We replaced it from a local electrical distributor. Avoid the temptation to buy on  Amazon . Your odds of getting quality cable are poor.

That's tricky to answer, If you can see copper anywhere then no tape should never be used to "repair". If you cant see copper then tape can be used to reenforce the original jacket material. I would recommend a tape like this

The best option for worn power cables is always to replace them though. I know that before i leave Alaska im replacing mine with 6/4SEOOW  at roughly 10 bucks a foot. totally worth it for peace of mind.

I used Scotch 130C Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape but the Glendinning Power Reel CM-7 chewed it up.  I didn't have bare wire exposed, just the insulated wires which had no damage.  I used Southwire 6/4 SOOW to replace it.  I made extension cords from the 38' remaining of the 100' roll and the 40' wire I took off of the reel.

I wanted to add to my original post now that I remember a little more......

I did find that my power cord was chewed up, and I had to make an adjustment to prevent future cord cutting.  My cord was getting cut when the cord jumped off the powered reel and stopped feeding.  I needed to move the position of the pulley so that it would not jump off.  I think it was this way from the factory.

I remember using an allen wrench to loosen the pulley, and then used a pry bar to move the pulley into the correct position on the shaft.

Another thing I did was to put a strip of green, yellow and red electical tape spaced a few feet apart near the end of the cord so that I did not pull on the end of the cord that remained in the compartment to alert me........

I don’t want to hijack this thread but this is related: I have been fighting with the 50amp power cord ‘coiling’ into the bay correctly. I did reinstall the metal sheet that was used to ‘box’ in the cabling but I have to fight to get it into the bay in a nice neat coil. Is there any way to make this cable feed into the box correctly or am I doomed to always have one hand precariously hanging in the bay waiting to get caught up in the cable???

What power reel do you have?  Have you tried extending the cable all the way out and leaving it stretched out all day or all night?  I had the same problem when I installed the new cable so I left it completely extended in a straight line overnight which let the cord forget its memory.  That cured it.
